Goldberg sale 109, lot 2763
Tuscany G109-2763r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2763 in Goldberg sale 109 (Los Angeles, January 2019), where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italian States: Tuscany. 10 Quattrini, 1801. Billon. Louis I. NGC graded MS-65." This type was struck 1800-01 during the Austro-Russian occupation. The Grand Duchy of Tuscany, founded by the Medici in the early 1500's, collapsed in 1799 with the arrival of Napoleon's army. The region went thru many vicissitudes until it was annexed outright by Napoleon in 1807, only to be returned to the Hapsburgs in 1814. It was incorporated into the new kingdom of Italy in 1860. These obscure little Italian states coins don't catalog for much but are very difficult to find. Note the inverted "1's" in the date.

Recorded mintage: 255,053.

Specification: 1.99 g, .263 fine silver, 20 mm diameter, plain edge.

Catalog reference: Gig-53, KM-C41; Pagani-7 (Rare).
