Stephen Album sale 43, lot 453

This specimen was lot 453 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY: Mehmet V, 1909-1918, AV 500 kurush, Kostantiniye, AH1327 year 3, monnaie de luxe type, mount removed, some scratches, mainly on the reverse, F-VF." This denomination was introduced during the rule of Sultan Abdul Mejid (r. 1839-61). Ottoman coins were dated using regnal years; the reverse bears the date AH 1327 (= 1909 A.D.) while the obverse bears the regnal year 3 (1911). The Hejira calendar uses a lunar year instead of a solar year, so its starting date moves from year to year. According to the SCWC, this monnaie de luxe type was struck years 2-8 and most were sold to jewelers. Other 500 kurush for year 3 include KM 758 (mint visit), 765 (regular issue), 801 (mint visit), 807 (mint visit), 813 (mint visit).

Recorded mintage: unknown plus 4,631 of KM 765.

Specification: 35.08 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 34.41 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-178, KM-778.
