Turkey AH 1222(1) para
This specimen was lot 2306 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"OSMANISCHES REICH | Mustafâ IV., 1222-1223 H./1807-1808 AD, Para 1222 H./Jahr 1, Qustantînîya (Konstantinopel/Istanbul). Tughra, Rv. Regierungsjahr, Münzstätte und Jahr des Regierungsanfangs. Sehr schön. (Turkey, Mustafa IV, 1807-08, para of AH 1222, year 1, Constantinople mint. Obverse: toughra; reverse: date and mintmark. Very fine.)"
Turkish issues before the reform of 1839 are a mess of constantly changing denominations as the government attempted to debase its way out of perpetual bankruptcy. Matters were regularized in the reign of Abdul Mejid, with gold coins issued in multiples of the kuruş. The coinage from Mustafa's brief reign is scanty and expensive. This para was struck years 1 and 2.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 0.40 g, 0.465 fine silver, this specimen 0.47 g.
