Turkey SB620-73608rev.jpg

This specimen was lot 73608 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY. 2 Kurush, AH 1203 Year 7 (1781). Abdul Hamid I. NGC MS-64. A nicely preserved example of this typically crude issue exhibiting a bold strike, though uneven, with plenty of luster and nice satiny surfaces. An impressive large format Islamic silver coin nearly the same weight and diameter of classic crowns." This type was struck years 1-19 for Selim III (1789-1807), not Abdul Hamid I. It has a low catalog value as the bad strike and debased alloy make it unattractive to collectors. It must have been even less desirable to merchants of the period.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.465 fine silver, 25.2-25.8 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-1818; KM 504.
