Stack's Bowers February 2024 Collector's Choice sale, lot 75805

This specimen was lot 75805 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2024), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "TURKEY. Ottoman Empire. Zolota, AH 1171 Year 6 (1763/4). Istanbul (Islambul) Mint. Mustafa III. PCGS AU-58. Featuring a fairly pleasing strike with clear calligraphy, this example resides at the cusp of Mint State status." Turkish issues before the reform of 1839 are a mess of constantly changing denominations as the government attempted to debase its way out of perpetual bankruptcy. The zolota was ¾ kurush or 30 para. This type was struck years 1 thru 9.
