Jean Elsen sale 148, lot 1208

This specimen was lot 1208 in Jean Elsen sale 148 (Brussels, September 2021), where it sold for €220 (about US$312 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "OTTOMAN EMPIRE, Mahmud I (AD 1730-1754/AH 1143-1168) AV 1 1/2 findik, AH 1143, Islambul. Holed. Very Fine." During Mahmud's reign, mint officals did not use regnal years, so the coinage can only be dated to the accession year, AH 1143. The SCWC shows several designs for this denomination, KM 238 (plain border), KM 229, 230 (fancy border) and KM 231 (rose below toughra, shown here). In Friedberg, these are lumped together as Fr-38 (fancy border) and Fr-40 (plain border).
