Tripoli AH 1210 10 para
This specimen was lot 2301 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it sold for 220 CHF (about US$267 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"OSMANISCHES REICH | Selîm III., 1203-1222 H./1789-1807 AD. Onluk 1210 H., Tarâblus gharb/Libyen. Titel, Sultansname und Segenswunsch, Rv. Münzstätte und Prägejahr. Sehr schön. (Turkey, Selim III, 1789-1807, onluk of AH 1210, Tripoli mint in Libya. Obverse: title, name and blessing; reverse: mintmark and date. Very fine.)"
This rare type is listed for years AH 1210-1214. Theoretically, forty paras = one piastre, but the constant debasements threw the ratio into confusion. In the eighteenth century, Tripoli was one of the Barbary States preying on commerce plying the Mediterranean.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, 26 mm diameter, this specimen 3.51 g.
