Stephen Album sale 43, lot 439

This specimen was lot 439 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "TRIPOLI: Selim III, 1789-1807, AR 100 para, Tarabulus (Tripoli in Libya), AH1210, a few light scratches on each side, VF, R." This type was struck AH 1203, 1209, 1210 and all dates are very scarce. Theoretically, forty paras = one piastre, but the constant debasements threw the ratio into confusion. In the eighteenth century, Tripoli was one of the Barbary States preying on commerce plying the Mediterranean.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 30.6-31.3 g, silver, 45 mm diameter, this specimen 30.42 g.
