Sincona sale 89, lot 593

This specimen was lot 593 in Sincona sale 89 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$925 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Trier, Erzbistum, Kuno von Falkenstein, 1362-1388. Goldgulden o. J. (1374-1376), Oberwesel. Selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Sammlung V. Brand, Teil 4, Auktion Leu 69, Zürich, Juni 1997, Los 5382. Aus dem Goldfund Thaleischweiler (Rheinpfalz), Auktion O. Helbing Nachf., München, Juni 1920, Los 2352. (Germany, archbishopric of Trier, Kuno von Falkenstein, 1362-88, undated goldgulden, Oberwesel mint. Rare, Very fine-extremely fine. Ex-Virgil Brand collection.)"

Trier and the other archbishoprics were significant producers of gold in the Middle Ages.
