Transylvania H3040-30692r.jpg

This specimen was lot 30692 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), where it sold for $2,702.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Georg Rakoczi II Taler 1658-NB XF45 NGC, Nagybánya (Neustadt) mint, Rare and highly desirable thus, the remaining details on this lightly circulated example are superb. Very little doubling is present in the strike and is confined primarily to the legends. Some deeper patination is noted on the reverse, but the overall effect of the cabinet patina is quite pleasing." This type (struck 1658-59) is fairly common for a thaler from this locale. As Transylvania was never part of the Holy Roman Empire and was not at this point controlled by the Hapsburgs, we have not included it in the "silver thalers of Germany." A very similar thaler exists (Dav-4752) with a slightly different obverse legend.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-4755; KM-311, Resch-134.
