Transylvania 1656-NB thaler Dav-4752
This specimen was lot 5134 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €4,600 (about US$6,328 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SIEBENBÜRGEN, FÜRSTEN Georg Rakoczi II., 1648-1660. Reichstaler 1656 NB, Nagybánya. R Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Kreß 130, München 1964, Nr. 2232. (principality of Transylvania, George Rakoczi II, 1648-60, thaler of 1656, Nagybánya mint. Rare, attractive example with nice patina, extremely fine.)"
Like most coins of Transylvania, this type (struck 1656-58) is rare and expensive. As Transylvania was never part of the Holy Roman Empire and was not at this point controlled by the Hapsburgs, we have not included it in the "silver thalers of Germany."
