This specimen was lot 4309 in Sincona sale 26 (Zürich, October 2015), where it sold for 2,200 CHF (about US$2,718 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Georg Rakoczi II. 1648-1660 Taler 1659. Nágybanya. Selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (principality of Transylvania, Georg Rakoczi II, 1648-60, thaler of 1659, Nagybánya mint. Scarce, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The princes of Transylvania were sandwiched between the Ottoman Empire to the south and the Hapsburg dominions to the west and attempted to maintain independence from both. The Hapsburgs reconquered Hungary from the Turks in the 1680's and ended Transylvanian autonomy. This type is listed for 1658-59 and is fairly common for a thaler of this locale.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
