Ticino 1835 1/4 franco
This specimen was lot 2986 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND, Tessin/Ticino, Viertelfranken 1835. FDC. Hübsche Patina. (canton of Ticino, quarter franco of 1835. Uncirculated, Attractive patina.)"
After being temporarily unified under Napoleon's Helvetic Republic, the cantons went their separate ways after the Congress of Vienna and issued a torrent of low value coins. Not until 1850 would a unified confederation mint her own coins and terminate the local issues. In Ticino, an Italian-speaking canton, 12 denari = one soldo; 20 soldi = one franco. This quarto franco is accompanied by a three denari, six denari and a mezzo franco.
Reported Mintage: 58,000.
Specification: silver, this specimen 2.22 g.
