Thorn and Danzig in 1648

This specimen was lot 31280 in Heritage Sale 3115 (Chicago, May 2024), where it sold for $15,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Poland: Thorn. Johann II Casimir gold Ducat 1661/0-HDL AU55 PCGS, Thorn mint. A handsome and golden city-issue seen with less frequency than issues from its northern neighbor, Danzig. Possessing a satisfying, mellowed patina across decidedly mark-free surfaces, but precluded from a higher assignment by the dispersal of light friction. A fine offering that rarely surfaces at auction. Ex. Fernand David Collection. Ex. Heritage Auctions #3102 (November 2022, Lot 31164)." This type was struck 1649-61, 1666-67, and all dates are rare. Thorn, a German city on the Vistula river in Poland, issued an extensive series of gold coins.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.40 g.

Catalog reference: cf. KM 33 (overdate unlisted), Fr-60, Kop-8355.
