This specimen was lot 40728 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description[1] noted, "POLAND. Thorn. Taler, 1637-II. NGC VF Details--Scratches. Vladislaus IV (1632-48). Grafitti "N" lightly scratched on both sides. Toned." The SCWC records this type for 1633-38 and, while not common, as along the more available Polish thalers. Wladyslaw IV, a member of the Swedish Wasa family, ruled Poland 1633-48. The initials "II" stand for Jacob Jacobsen of Emden.
