Thorn 1638-II thaler Dav-4374
This specimen was lot 4792 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,249 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"POLEN, THORN, Stadt. Reichstaler 1638, mit Titel Wladislaws IV. (1632-1648). R Hübsche Patina, kl. Graffito im Feld der Vorderseite, sehr schön. (Poland, city of Thorn, thaler of 1638, struck in the name of Vladislaus IV, 1632-48. Rare, handsome patina, light graffiti in the obverse field, very fine.)"
This type was struck 1633-38. The similar Dav-4375 has a shorter and chunkier bust of the king with a prominent sash. This example sold for nearly six times the catalog value despite the scratch.
