Thorn 1633-II thaler Dav-4374
This specimen was lot 1569 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$3,229 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"POLOGNE, Wladislas IV (1632-1648), AR Taler, 1633II, Thorn. D/ B. cour. et cuir. à d., ten. une épée et un gl. cr. R/ Ecu de Thorn tenu par un ange aux ailes éployées. Rare Fin de plaque à 12h. Belle patine. Très Beau. (kingdom of Poland, Vladislaus IV, 1632-48, silver thaler of 1633, Thorn mint. Obverse: crowned and armored bust bearing a sword and orb; reverse: arms of Thorn borne by an angel with displayed wings. Rare, nice color, very fine.)"
The SCWC records this type for 1633-38 and, while not common, as along the more available Polish thalers. Wladyslaw IV, a member of the Swedish Wasa family, ruled Poland 1633-48. The initials "II" stand for Jacob Jacobsen of Emden.
