This type has been struck at the Bern mint since 1983. The design succeeded a silver issue (KM 23) of 1874-1967. The copper nickel issue of 1968-82 had 22 stars on the obverse. This specimen was plucked from circulation on a recent visit to Basel. Prior to confederation in 1850, each Swiss canton issued its own coins.
