Switzerland 1857-B rappen
This specimen was lot 5349 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$268 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "SWITZERLAND, 1 Rappen 1857 B, Bern. Stempelriss auf der Vorderseite. Richter (Fehlprägungen) -. Äusserst selten. Nicht mehr als 3 Stücke bekannt. NGC MS64 RB. Prachtvolle Erhaltung (Die crack on the obverse, Extremely rare. Not more than 3 pieces known, Magnificent condition)." This type was struck 1850-1900. This date has a high catalog value, especially compared to twentieth century dates which can be had for a few dollars in any grade. We are not familiar enough with the market to know if the catalog price is realistic. The die flaw mentioned by the auctioneers did not bring a premium. A slightly lighter version (KM 3.2) was struck 1902-41.
Recorded mintage: 1,587,000, a better date but not rare.
Specification: bronze.
