Switzerland 1864-B rappen
This specimen was lot 31591 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $822.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Confederation Rappen 1864-B MS66 Brown NGC, Bern mint. One of the key dates to the entire series, and one of the finest survivors of the date, with mark-free surfaces and sensational color throughout, the obverse featuring lilac and original pinkish-red hue, while the reverse is bathed in purple-blue patina. We sold a PCGS-graded XF45 of this date for $246.75 in May 2014 and we expect this example, as the single finest graded at NGC or PCGS, to bring multiples of that amount. From the Redwood Collection, Part II." This type was first issued in 1850. This date has a very high catalog value, especially compared to twentieth century dates which can be had for a few dollars in any grade. We are not familiar enough with the market to know if the catalog price is realistic.
Recorded mintage: 501,000.
