Sweden 1876 2 kronor rev H3029-30287.jpg

This specimen was lot 30287 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $15,862.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Rare Wide Date Variety Oscar II 2 Kronor 1876 Wide Date and Large EB, MS66 NGC. An exquisite coin with the perfect blend of aged gray and blue-gold patina and full underlying mint luster. This variety is extremely rare in all grades and is unpriced above VF in most Scandinavian price guides. We doubt that a finer example exists and anticipate spirited competition from collectors of this highly popular series. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman / B.G. Johnson." Collecting Swedish coins is complicated by the multiple currency reforms the country underwent during the period. In 1873, the riksdaler species was dropped and 100 öre = 1 krona (the krona, at 7.5 g, 0.800 fine silver, was slightly smaller than the old riksdaler riksmynt). This date comes in small date (common) and large date (rare) varieties. The type was struck until 1880. The system adopted in 1873 is still in use today, the Swedes having recently declined to adopt the euro.

Recorded mintage: 370,000 minted (all varieties).

Specification: 15 g, 0.800 fine silver.
