This specimen was lot 72759 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 1/4 Riksdaler, 1830-CB. Stockholm Mint. Carl XIV Johan. NGC MS-64. The finest in the NCG census, this charming near-Gem offers a pleasing steel gray tone with some hints of luster beneath." The present dynasty is descended from Charles Bernadotte, one of Napoleon's generals who defected to Sweden. Collecting Swedish coins is complicated by the multiple currency reforms the country underwent during the period. This type was the first of its denomination struck in the nineteenth century. It was issued 1830-36 and was accompanied by a 1/16 rikdaler (KM 644), 1/12 riksdaler (KM 630), 1/8 riksdaler (KM 626), half riksdaler (KM 631), riksdaler (KM 632) and ducat (KM 628) and various copper issues.
