Sweden 1831-CB 1/4 riksdaler
This specimen was lot 3287 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN: Carl XIV Johan, 1818-1844, AR 1/4 riksdaler, 1831, initials CB, lightly toned, Choice VF." The present dynasty is descended from Charles Bernadotte, one of Napoleon's generals who defected to Sweden. Collecting Swedish coins is complicated by the multiple currency reforms the country underwent during the period. This type was the first of its denomination struck in the nineteenth century. It was issued 1830-36 and was accompanied by a 1/16 rikdaler (KM 644), 1/12 riksdaler (KM 630), 1/8 riksdaler (KM 626), half riksdaler (KM 631), riksdaler (KM 632) and ducat (KM 628) and various copper issues.
