from the Stack's Bowers 2017 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72989

This specimen was lot 72989 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Santa Ana, CA, May 2017), where it sold for $235. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 1/3 Riksdaler, 1789-OL. Gustaf III (1771-1792). NGC MS-63. Good strike with frosty luster." This denomination was introduced in 1776 to replace the two mark last minted in 1754. It must have been a success, as this type was struck 1778-89 in large numbers and is common today.
