Sweden 1738 1/2 daler
This specimen was lot 1700 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $1,057.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. 1/2 Daler Plate Money, 1738. Fredrik I (1720-51). 3.25 x 3.5 in. RARE (Tingstrom: Only 30 examples known including 6 pieces from the Nicobar). Stamps mostly well applied with the center stamp about three-quarters full, and corner stamps full and complete. All four dates full and legible, and two corner stamps with evidence of a second strike. Lightly glossy chestnut patina. A very attractive well made plate." In the pre-reform Swedish coinage, 8 öre = one mark and 96 öre = one riksdaler. This type was issued 1720-46 and is the most common half daler plate. Millions were made but most were melted down to make other copper or bronze objects.
