Sweden 1741 1/2 daler
This specimen was lot 75687 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "SWEDEN. Copper 1/2 Daler Plate Money, 1741. Avesta Mint. Fredrik I. VERY FINE. Stamps: Central stamp bearing denomination (1/2 DALER SILFMYNT) and crossed arrows, surrounded by four stamps bearing crowned FRS and date. A charming example, with well impressed peripheral stamps, and a woodgrain copper appearance. Some evidence of weakness and handling is seen, but this does little to dampen the attractivity of the piece. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." The famous Swedish plate money was issued from 1644 to 1776 in denominations from half a daler to four dalers. This half daler plate, struck 1720-50, is probably the most common. Large numbers have been recovered from wrecks.
