Sweden 1694-AS 8 mark Dav-4539
This specimen was lot 4829 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabruck, March 2024), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,247 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Karl XI. 1660-1697. 8 Mark 1694 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1693 geändert), Stockholm. Mit Randschrift. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, vorzüglich. (kingdom of Sweden, Charles XI, 1660-97, eight mark of 1694, Stockholm mint, 1694/3 overdate, with edge lettering. Attractive example with handsome patina, extremely fine.)"
The catalogs note that the minting of riksdalers dwindled in the 1650's and ceased in the 1670's in favor of the eight mark but does not note why. The striking of riksdalers resumed in the eighteenth century after the Great Northern War (1700-21). This type was struck 1692-96 in sufficient numbers to be the most common eight mark of the seventeenth century. The overdate is awarded a slight premium in the SCWC.
Recorded mintage: 51,000 with and without the overdate.
Specification: 31.35 g, 0.922 fine silver, 41.5 mm diameter, this specimen 31.23 g.
