SB822-36407r.jpg

This specimen was lot 36407 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Sumatra (under Kingdom of the Netherlands). 1/2 Stuiver, 1823-S. PCGS AU-53." In 1815, the British returned Sumatra and Java to the Dutch at the Congress of Vienna. In exchange, the British retained Singapore and made it their main base in the East Indies. This type was accompanied by one-eighth, quarter and one stuivers and duits. Another half stuiver, also struck 1821-26 (KM 284.2), has "INDIA. BATAV." on the reverse and was probably locally produced. Decimal coinage was introduced in 1833 and made general for the entire colony in 1854.

Recorded mintage: 19,000,000.

Specification: 6 g, copper, 25.5 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-285.
