Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71809

This specimen was lot 71809 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Kingdom of the Netherlands. Sumatra. Duit, 1820. NGC AU Details--Environmental Damage. Quite attractive for the assigned grade with no major signs of environmental damage to speak of." In 1815, the British returned Sumatra and Java to the Dutch at the Congress of Vienna. In exchange, the British retained Singapore and made it their main base in the East Indies. This type was struck 1818-22 and is common. A closely related variety, with slightly modified arms (KM 282.2), was struck 1821-26. Decimal coinage was introduced in 1833 and made general for the entire colony in 1854.
