Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 45505

This specimen was lot 45505 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Sumatra. 1/2 Duit, 1816-S. NGC AU-58 Brown. Type struck 1820-22. A well struck coin with dark chocolate brown patina throughout." This type was struck after the British returned Sumatra and Java to the Dutch at the Congress of Vienna. In exchange, the British retained Singapore and made it their main base in the East Indies.
