This specimen was lot 75553 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2024), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Sumatra. 1/4 Stuiver, 1822-S. Utrecht Mint. William I. PCGS MS-62 Brown. This copper minor flashes vibrantly with brown patina and metallic blue undertones. Mint State in quality and quite attractive." In 1815, the British returned Sumatra and Java to the Dutch at the Congress of Vienna. In exchange, the British retained Singapore and made it their main base in the East Indies. This type, struck 1822-26 and 1836, was accompanied by one-eighth, half and one stuivers and duits. Decimal coinage was introduced in 1833 and made general for the entire colony in 1854. British counterfeits exist for some dates (KM Tn6) which are lighter and thinner.
