Sudan 1980 5 ghirsh
This specimen was lot 70213 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2022), where it sold for $408. The catalog description[1] noted, "SUDAN. 5 Ghirsh, AH 1400 (1980). Kings Norton Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-67+. This lovely example offers dazzling sharp strike and stunningly rich reflectivity on surfaces that provide the viewer with an ocular treat. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." Sudan obtained independence from Great Britain and Egypt in 1956 and began to issue coins soon thereafter. The Christian, black-dominated south has never regarded itself as part of the Arab-dominated north and the resulting conflict has frequently erupted into war. This type was struck 1977-1980 with variations in legend size and ribbon design (KM 58.1 thru 58.4).
