The specimen shown was struck for Sudan as part of the F.A.O. series. It was accompanied by a similar ten ghirsh (KM 67) and two ghirsh (KM 63.1). It was struck again in 1978. Another five ghirsh exists (KM 66) honoring the twentieth anniversary of independence. The Christian, black-dominated south has never regarded itself as part of the Arab-dominated north and the resulting conflict has frequently erupted into war.
Recorded mintage: 500,000.
Specification: copper-nickel.
Catalog reference: KM 65.
