This specimen was lot 2477 in Goldberg sale 106 (Los Angeles, September 2018), where it sold for $84. The catalog description[1] noted, "Sudan. 5 Pounds, 1976. Hippopotamus. NGC graded Proof 67 Ultra Cameo." Sudan obtained independence from Great Britain and Egypt in 1956 and began to issue coins soon thereafter. The Christian, black-dominated south has never regarded itself as part of the Arab-dominated north and the resulting conflict has frequently erupted into war. This commemorative promotes wildlife conservation and was issued with a silver 2½ pounds (KM 70) and gold hundred pounds (KM 72).
