Sudan 1976 100 pounds Fr-2
This specimen was lot 2005 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it sold for 1,600 CHF (about US$1,919 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SUDAN | Republik 1956-, 100 Pounds 1976 (1396 AH). Selten. Nur 872 Exemplare geprägt. FDC. (republic of Sudan, since 1956, one hundred pounds of 1976. Rare. Only 872 pieces struck. Uncirculated.)"
Sudan obtained independence from Great Britain and Egypt in 1956 and began to issue coins soon thereafter. The Christian, black-dominated south has never regarded itself as part of the Arab-dominated north and the resulting conflict has frequently erupted into war. This commemorative promotes wildlife conservation.
