Strasbourg 1760-JG 1/2 thaler
This specimen was lot 1917 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €3,800 (about US$5,122 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANKREICH/ELSASS, STRASSBURG, BISTUM, Ludwig Constantin von Rohan, 1756-1777. 1/2 Taler 1760, Oberkirch. Von großer Seltenheit. Fast vorzüglich. (French states, bishopric of Strasbourg, Louis Constantine of Rohan, 1756-77, half thaler of 1760, Oberkirch mint. Very rare, about extremely fine.)"
This type of 1759-60 is incorrectly catalogued in the SCWC as a quarter thaler. It is accompanied by a twelfth thaler (KM 223) and a sixth thaler (KM 226). The bishop continued to issue coins long after France had annexed the actual town of Strasbourg. The last issue is a twenty kreuzer of 1773 (KM 162).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
Catalog reference: Engel/Lehr 304, KM 241.
