This specimen was lot 5016 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €10,000 (about US$13,917 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"FRANKREICH/ELSASS, STRASSBURG, BISTUM, Ludwig Constantin von Rohan, 1756-1777. 1/2 Constantin d'or 1759, Oberkirch. LUD · CONST · D · G · EPUS · ET PPS · ARGENT · LAN · AL · Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat mit Ordensstern, darunter Hund und die Münzmeistersignatur J · G · (Jean Gamot)//(Diamant und Hermelinschwanz) GENERE SEDE VIRTUTE CORUSCUS f 1759 Mit Kardinalshut bedeckter Hermelinmantel, davor das mit dem Fürstenhut bedeckte Wappen auf Schwert und Krummstab gekreuzt. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Prachtexemplar. Fast Stempelglanz. (France, bishopric of Strasbourg, Louis Constantine of Rohan, 1756-77, half gold constantine. Obverse: bust right in clerical dress with order star, hound below; reverse: mantled arms with cardinal's hat, sword and crozier. Extremely rare, choice example, about uncirculated.)
Das Bistum Straßburg, das der Erzdiözese Mainz unterstellt war, erstreckte sich auf das Unterelsaß ohne Weissenburg, kleine Teile des Oberelsaß sowie rechtsrheinisch auf das Gebiet zwischen Elz und Baden-Baden bis zum Schwarzwaldkamm. Weitere Gebietsgewinne im 14. Jahrhundert, so 1303 Oberkirch, ließen das Territorium auf eine Größe von 1.400 Quadratkilometer anwachsen. 1680 kamen die linksrheinischen Gebiete an Frankreich und wurden 1789-1792 säkularisiert. Die rechtsrheinischen Gebiete fielen 1803 an Baden. (The diocese of Strasbourg, which was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Mainz, extended to Lower Alsace without Weissenburg, small parts of Upper Alsace and on the right bank of the Rhine to the area between Alsace and Baden-Baden as far as the Black Forest ridge. Further territorial gains in the 14th century, such as Oberkirch in 1303, let the territory grow to a size of 1,400 square kilometers. In 1680 the areas on the left bank of the Rhine came to France and were secularized from 1789 to 1792. The areas on the right bank of the Rhine fell to Baden in 1803.)"
The city of Strasbourg was occupied by the French during the Thirty Years War and formally annexed in 1684. This coin is listed as a half pistole in Friedberg and the SCWC along with one and two pistoles, one twelfth, one sixth, one quarter and one thaler. The last episcopal issues were emitted in 1773. The diocese was ruled by the Rohan family 1704-1803.
