Straits Settlements 1902 5 cents

from the Stack's Bowers 2019 ANA sale, lot 23736

This specimen was lot 23736 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2019), where it sold for $960. The catalog description^[1] noted, "STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. 5 Cents, 1902. London Mint. Edward VII. PCGS MS-62. Touches of rainbow toning decorate this attractive and lustrous example. From the Estate of Ray H Corvin." This type was struck 1902-03 only. It was reduced to 0.600 fine in 1910, then 0.400 fine in 1918. The Straits Settlements began as a miscellaneous group of trading stations in Southeast Asia and gradually developed into what is now Malaya.
