This specimen was lot 75544 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $456. The catalog description[1] noted, "STRAITS SETTLEMENTS. Cent, 1888. London Mint. Victoria. NGC MS-61 Brown. Presenting mostly even brown surfaces, this alluring Mint State survivor provides an inviting overall appearance." This type was struck in 1887-1901 after the Straits Settlements were made a separate crown colony and is scarce in nice condition despite the large mintage. It was converted to bronze for the 1884 issue (KM 9a) and given a reeded edge for the 1889 issue (KM 16).
Recorded mintage: 10,000,000.
Specification: 9.3 g, bronze, 29 mm diameter, reeded edge.
Catalog reference: KM-16; Prid-177.
