Künker sale 400, lot 276
Stolberg in 1789, with Wernigerode to the northwest near Halberstadt

This specimen was lot 276 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €11,000 (about US$14,270 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"STOLBERG-WERNIGERODE, GRAFSCHAFT, Heinrich Ernst I. 1638-1672. Taler 1672, Wernigerode, auf seinen Tod. HEINRICH · ERNST · COMES · IN · STOL · KONIG · RIT · WERNIGE *** Acht Zeilen Schrift mit Lebensdaten über Totenschädel und gekreuzten Beinknochen, darunter zwei Zeilen Schrift//É ET · HOHEN · DO · IN · EPSTEIN · MIN · BREI · EICH · LOR · ET · CLET Hirsch geht l. Von größter Seltenheit, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Attraktives Exemplar, min. Reste von Zaponlack, vorzüglich +. (Germany, county of Stolberg-Wernigerode, Henry Ernest I, 1638-72, thaler of 1672, Wernigerode mint, on his death. Obverse: Eight lines inscription with skulls and crossed leg bones; reverse: stag left. Extremely rare, especially in this condition. Attractive example, minimal remains of lacquer, extremely fine or better.)"

Another rare one year type. The county was the result of a partition of Stolberg in 1645. The family survived into the Wilhelmine empire but lost its sovereignty to mediatization in 1807. The death commemorated here is that of the founder, Henry Ernest.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28,82 g.
