Sincona sale 18, lot 3243

This specimen was lot 3243 in Sincona sale 18 (Zürich, May 2014), where it sold for CHF 250 (about US$329 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"25000 Dobras-50 Ecu 1993. FDC aus Polierter Platte. (St. Thomas and Prince Is., 25,000 dobras or 50 ecus of 1993. Proof.)"

This type honoring a trade treaty with the European Common Market was issued in sets with silver (KM 68) and copper-nickel (KM 67) counterparts. Circulating coinage from this impoverished country, which obtained independence from Portugal in 1975, is very scanty.

Recorded mintage: 1,000 proofs.
