Sed36-1446r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1446 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $2,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Madrid, gold proof 80000 pesetas, Juan Carlos I, 2001, Segovia mint rehabilitation fund, NGC PF 69 Ultra Cameo, "top pop." Beautiful mirror cameo in rich gold color with virtually no flaws, currently tied with three others for finest in the NGC census, the central design depicting a 1611 8 escudos on one side and a view of the front entry building of the mint on the other." This NCLT, issued for the rehabilitation of the Segovia mint, was accompanied by a silver 500 pesetas (KM 1131), a silver 2000 pesetas (KM 1038) and a silver 10,000 pesetas. Old minting equipment was featured on one side and an obsolete coin on the other. We don't know why the SCWC lists only two of the four coins in the set. The peseta was retired in favor of the euro in 2001.

Recorded mintage: 2,500 proofs.

Specification: 27 g, 0.999 fine gold, 38 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Cayón-18357, KM-unlisted; Fr-397.
