This specimen was lot 31181 in Heritage auction 3096 (Dallas, TX, March 2021), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain: Juan Carlos I gold Proof "Charles V" 40000 Pesetas 2000-M PR69 Ultra Cameo NGC, Madrid mint. This specimen was struck to celebrate the quincentenary of Charles V. Engraved with his regal portrait and the "pillar dollar" reverse, this is the sole example seen at NGC and PCGS. From the Paramount Collection." As inflation ground away at the value of the peseta, the government resorted to ever larger denominations for its NCLT's. This one was accompanied by a 10,000 pesetas in silver and is among the last issues before the conversion to the euro.

Recorded mintage: 4,000.

Specification: gold, AGW 0.4978 oz.
