Spain 1894-PG V 5 pesetas (94)
The specimen shown was lot 447 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 250 € (about US$388 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Alfonso XIII (1885-1931). 1894*1894. PGV. 5 pesetas. Rara así. S/C-. (Alfonso XIII, 1885-1931, five pesetas of 1894, about uncirculated, rare thus.)"
In 1885, Alfonso XII died young of tuberculosis, leaving a posthumous son who was crowned Alfonso XIII. In 1869, the peso was reduced to 25 grams and set equal to five pesetas with each peseta divisible into 100 centimos. This system would prevail until the coming of the euro. This design, issued while the king was a boy, was struck in large numbers 1892-94 and is fairly common in grades up to Very Fine.
