Spain 1896-PG V peseta (96)
The specimen shown was lot 441 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 62 € (about US$96 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Alfonso XIII (1885-1931). 1896*1896. PGV. 1 peseta. Bella. Brillo original. EBC+/S/C-. (Alfonso XIII, 1885-1931, peseta of 1896, handsome, lustrous, extremely fine to about uncirculated.)"
In 1885, Alfonso XII died young of tuberculosis, leaving a posthumous son who was crowned Alfonso XIII. In 1869, the peso was reduced to 25 grams and set equal to five pesetas with each peseta divisible into 100 centimos. This system would prevail until the coming of the euro. This design, issued while the king was a boy, was struck in large numbers 1896-1900 and is fairly common in grades up to Very Fine.
Recorded mintage: 6,412,000.
Specification: 5 g, 0.900 fine silver, .134 troy oz ASW.
