Spain 1866 escudo 6 point star
This specimen was lot 965 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,149.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN, Reino de España. Isabel II. 1833-1868. AR Escudo. Second decimal coinage. Madrid mint; im: 6 pointed star. Dated 1866. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 65 WINGS APPROVED. Gem naturally toned uncirculated. Moderate to darker chocolate color. Only coin graded for this date and very choice. Ex Superior Stamp & Coin (13 June 1977), lot 2400 (Purchased as a Proof)." This Spanish silver escudo was struck during the late years of Isabel II (1833-68). This type was struck in Madrid and Seville 1864-68. Instead of the traditional mintmarks the issues are distinguished by six, seven or eight pointed stars on the reverse (for Madrid, Seville and Barcelona). In 1850, the twenty reales was reduced to 26.91 grams. This having proven unsatisfactory, the coinage was reformed again in 1864. The twenty reales was dropped in favor of a two escudos silver coin, reduced to 25.96 grams. One hundred centimos = one escudo. Unfortunately, the government, financially prostrate as usual, was unable to remint the old coins, which continued to circulate as before. The coinage would be reformed a third time in 1869.
Recorded mintage: 2,165,113 for 1866-67.
Specification: 12.98 g, 0.900 fine silver, .375 troy oz ASW, this specimen Ø29 mm, 12.99 g, 12h axis.
