Spain 1866 2-1/2 centimos 8 point star
The specimen shown was lot 2408 in Aureo y Calicó sale 232 (Barcelona, March 2011), where it sold for 45 euros (about US$74 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1866. Barcelona. 2 1/2 céntimos de escudo. Sin OM. Atractiva. EBC-/EBC. (2½ centimos de escudo of 1866, Barcelona mint, without "OM", attractive extremely fine.)"
This Spanish 2½ centimos was part of the second decimal reform of 1864. In 1850, the twenty reales was reduced to 26.91 grams. This having proven unsatisfactory, the coinage was reformed again in 1864. The twenty reales was dropped in favor of a two escudos silver coin, reduced to 25.96 grams. One hundred centimos = one escudo. Instead of the traditional "M" and "S" mintmarks the issues are distinguished by three, four, six, seven or eight pointed stars on the reverse (for Segovia, Jubia, Madrid, Seville and Barcelona). This type was struck 1866-68. This date comes with or without the designer's initials "OM" on the reverse. Unfortunately, the government, financially prostrate as usual, was unable to remint the old coins, which continued to circulate as before.
Recorded mintage: unknown but rare without the "OM".
Specification: copper, 6.25 g, 25 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: Cayón-16688 (without "OM"), KM 634.1, Cal. 638.
