Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72267
SB1021-72267r.jpg

The first specimen was lot 1192 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 28 (Winter Park, FL, November 2020), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "Madrid, Spain, gold bust 1/2 escudo, Charles III, 1785DV. Deeply red-toned XF, no problems, scarce final date of first type with proper bust." The second specimen was lot 72267 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $630. The catalog description[2] noted, "SPAIN. 1/2 Escudo, 1785-M DV. Madrid Mint. Charles III. PCGS EF-45. A pleasing, boldly struck coin with surfaces free of distracting marks, quite presentable for the type." This type was struck in Madrid 1772-85 (KM 415.1) and Seville 1773-83 (KM 415.2) and is not especially rare tho choice specimens are always in demand. Half escudos were struck in metropolitan Spain 1738-97 in considerable numbers and are quite a bit more common than their silver equals, the eight reales. This is opposite from Latin America, where silver pesos were minted in vast quantities but half escudos would not be minted until the reign of Ferdinand VII.

Reported Mintage: unknown but a scarce date.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.901 fine gold, .049 troy oz AGW, this specimen 1.75 grams.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12196, Cal-1278; KM-415.1.
