Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 226

This specimen was lot 226 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 2,200 € (about US$2,874 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1742. Felipe V. Madrid. JA. 1 escudo. Only year of this assayer. Nice. Original luster. Graded by NGC as AU58, no. 6771171-004. Very rare, especially in this condition, we have only had ten examples. EBC+ [choice extremely fine]. Ex Aureo & Calico Selection 2017, no. 197." This is the key date of a rather scarce type struck 1729-30 and 1733-42. Assayer JF is also reported for 1742.

Recorded mintage: 12,852 plus 10,132 for assayer JF, per Numista.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.901 fine gold, 18 mm diameter, this specimen 3.39 g.
