This specimen was lot 33956 in Heritage sale 3114 (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $5,520. The lot description[1] noted, "Spain: Philip V 8 Reales 1706 S-P AU53 NGC, Seville mint. Denomination left. Incredibly scarce, the only example presently graded at NGC with representatives coming to public auction wholly infrequently, this being the first our firm has handled. Struck on a broad flan, wearing dark battleship gray patination that projects the argent highpoints into the viewer's space. Ex. Marti Hervera and Soler & Llach Auction 1121 (October 2021, Lot 1629); Privately Purchased from Mike Dunigan in December 1990." This was issued from Seville in the midst of the War of the Spanish Succession, wherein Philip V successfully defeated the archduke Charles' attempt to seize the throne. This type was issued at Madrid and Seville 1704-14 altho Madrid issued only cobs in 1706. The succeeding type featured a larger crown. All the early eight reales of Spain are rare and expensive.
